I had a day recently … you know, one of THOSE days.
It was laughable how many things went wrong for me that day.
I was so stubbornly determined not to let that day get to me. I was winning for a while and then I let go.
Its OK to let go.
I was acutely aware that these things, that day, was not the worst day of my life. Not even close. But it was pretty crappy, those days do happen.
That day reminded me of all the relaxation techniques that have become such an important part of my life. I actually take them for granted now. Its like anything, the more you do it, the better you become at it until finally it is a natural part of your life.
I remember when I was first learning about relaxation. The breathing techniques made a lot of sense to me because, as a Singer, I have always been a big fan of my diaphragm. But breathing for relaxation …?
I started out small; slow breathing in bed at night. Some nights were harder than others. As busy and noisy as my mind was it was difficult to concentrate on such a simple thing as taking a big slow breath some nights. So frustrating. Shut up Brain!
Over time, with practise, it became easier and oh so much more effective. Once you have enjoyed the deep, peaceful sleep that comes from a good deep breathing session you will never think about breathing the same way. The real challenge is in bringing those skills and techniques into your day … without putting yourself to sleep that is :-P
Nowadays, its become like a little drug hit. To stop myself amidst the chaos and stress of a moment and take a deep purposeful breath … there’s truly nothing like it. In that moment I often take stock; I remind my brain that my feet are firmly planted on the ground/floor, my skin is present and holding me all inside, I am OK.
It’s wonderful!
It’s not all always easy …. nothing wonderful is every always easy. That’s what makes it wonderful.
And there is most certainly a time a place for just loosing your shit, having a big cry and letting it all get to you. Just make sure that time and place is appropriate … for you and those around you.
And in the meantime … breathe.
Because you’re bloody worth getting to wonderful!
