I’d known for ages that something was wrong with my health. I could hear my body trying to tell me through the symptoms that had frustrated me for so long. But I couldn’t quite make out what it all meant. So of course I got online and googled the hell outta the symptoms. Bam! Heart disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis … I potentially had them all. Therein lies the danger of self-diagnosis right? One thing was for sure though, something was wrong and something had to change.
I was frustrated by my GP who, despite 3 appointments over 5 months, failed to think outside the square. I am a non-smoker who likes to keep fit. “You’re doing all the right things” she would say … :-(
By accident, a friend recommended that I see a Naturopath whom she had seen with excellent results. When I showed up for the appointment I soon realised that “Naturopath” was a gross understatement for this Specialist. The credentials in the waiting room showed Immunologist and Ecologist to be a more accurate Title.
The appointment was amazing. After an initial interview regarding my concerns and basic health info, he proceeded to summarise my symptoms as evidence of Liver Failure.
My Liver was dying, and slowly.
My poor Liver!
After confirmation of the diagnosis, the Specialist recommended swapping to a Grain-free, low fructose, low Dairy diet to completely cleanse my body and to give my poor Liver a chance at survival. I didn’t need to hear it twice. The sad reality of the Liver is its ability to die a slow and quiet death. I was in no immediate danger mind you. But the happy reality of the Liver is its amazing ability to rejuvenate. There was no need to panic, but every reason for action.
I swear I could hear my poor Liver celebrating!
It may be a buzz word now, but I don’t remember knowing anything about the Paleo diet prior to my diagnosis. Maybe I was just blind to it, not ready to hear it. But from that moment on, that very day, I cut all grains out of my life.
My poor Liver is now my Happy Liver … and we are BFF’s.
The symptoms that had plagued me for at least a year preceding that fateful appointment eased within days … and disappeared completely within about 2 weeks. 7 months later my Happy Liver has fully recovered and is now a vibrant, functioning part of the whole system that is my beautiful body.
Cutting the grains out of my life wasn’t difficult. After all, what was the alternative? The health of this body is way too important for my future. But isn’t it expensive? Initially yes, especially for a family of 7. But once the new staples were established the cost settled down. Every fortnight that I do the grocery shopping I am reminded of how much cheaper it would be to go back to the quick, pre-prepared grocery options. But what’s the true cost of good health? I want my kids to know that I made my health a priority, regardless of what I had to give up along the way.
Because I’m bloody worth it.
